At the Car Wash

After many weeks of snow, it was great to have a warm, sunny day to get my filthy car to the car wash. As I waited in line, I watched the truck in front of me go from grimy gray to shiny silver. As my car was getting sudsy and clean on the outside, I started to notice how dirty the inside looked. This is similar to our personal life. We may be struggling with something we don’t want others to see, but continue to do all kinds of things to look good on the outside: nice clothes, nice car, the right words, or a fake smile at the right time. If you have something you are keeping inside and need to talk to someone, please contact us. We’d love to help. Comment here.

Crushed but Not Destroyed

I was recently working on my vehicle when I smashed and cut my thumb on a sharp piece of glass. It very quickly bled and soon began to bruise. The first thing I did was apply pressure and look for a bandage. I was prepared and had some close at hand. It’s good to be prepared. What if it had been a bruised heart? There are times when we get hurt, but it’s on the inside. What do you do? Do you have any ‘bandages’ nearby when your heart gets bruised? Be prepared. Comment here.

We're Only Human

A wise friend once shared this, “As humans, we are all self conscience about our brokenness and lack of wholeness. We are also aware of our inability to cope with life. We know how powerless we are to control our bad habits, all of our daily temptations, our addictions, and the things we say and do to hurt the ones we love. We put up a big façade and pretend that we are in control and there is nothing wrong with us. But underneath it all, we are hurting, full of shame, guilt, and running scared.” Can you relate to this statement? Give us a call if you answered yes. Comment here.

Have a Remedy Ready for Your Heart

Along with the wonderful spring weather comes baseball season. If you like to play baseball or softball, then you are also familiar with the sprains and strains that come with it. Did you know that you can still get sprains and strains when climbing in and out of your truck or trailer? There a different ways of treating them too. Sometimes using heat, ice or alternating with both is needed depending on the type of injury you have.

However, heat and ice aren’t really options when it comes to matters of an aching heart. How do you handle heart sprains or strains? We all have them. Doesn’t it make sense to have a healthy remedy close at hand for when they occur? We can help. Comment here.

What’s Your Plan?

According to the Wellness Councils of America, the number one self-treated problem in the U.S. was the common cold and flu. I imagine most Americans already have over the counter medicine available at home so we can take care of ourselves at a moment’s notice if we feel a cold coming on.

Probably all of us experience minor depression when things just don’t seem right. Have you ever thought about being ready to care for yourself if you feel depression coming on? Is there someone you can talk to, a book you can read or music you can listen to that will help you get out of that funk? Give us a call and let us recommend a treatment plan for you! Comment here.

Are You Emotionally Broken?

On this blog, our goal is to help you with emotional wellness. What does that mean? Synonyms for wellness include words like whole, complete and healthy. If you look for the opposite meaning you’ll find words like partial, incomplete and sick. Another word with opposite meaning that really summed it up for me was broken. One first step towards becoming emotionally well is to find out what is broken. Is there anything like that in your life? Let’s talk about it. Comment here.

Count Your Joys

Fyodor Dostoevsky once said, “Man only likes to count his troubles, but he does not count his joys?” Dostoevsky’s statement reveals an understanding of the human mindset. Joy is really an attitude. It’s as hard to describe as the wind –even though we cannot see it we still know it’s there. Think about the following situations:

  • Joy happens when you finally get together with your loved one after being separated for a long time even if you’ve had disagreements in the past.
  •  Joy occurs when someone who has come close to death in the line of duty returns to their loved ones. No one is happy that they nearly died, but they are filled with joy over being reunited.
Spend time counting your joys. It will enable you to overcome any negative circumstance in life. Not experiencing any joy lately? Give us a call. Comment here.

The Hunter

As a deer hunter, I like to set up my blind near a frequently used food source long before I go hunting there. I want the deer to feel secure so I can catch them off guard. Often when they come down the very same path I used they’ll sense something isn’t quite right. They sniff the air or put their head down as if to eat, only to jerk it back up suddenly in hopes of catching predator movement. Other times, they stomp their front hoof to see if they can get the predator to blow his cover. Once in a while, a wise deer will raise its tail because it senses danger and then return back up the trail to safety. More often than not, most deer give in to temptation and continue down the path to the clover field below to eat. He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s already past the point of no return. He’s come too far down the path and now there’s no way out. This is just what I’ve been waiting for.

What’s your weakness? The next time you face temptation think about what’s waiting to ambush you at the end of the path. Stay alert! We can help. Comment here.

Prevention’s Worth It

When recovering from addiction, taking action must be approached carefully and thoroughly. Take time to reflect on previous experiences you’ve had that “lead” you to addiction. This will help you realize what went right and what went wrong. Then talk through each and every possible situation that might tempt you to use your addiction again. Listen to the responses of those who are helping you as they will most likely see your stressor points. Then clarify and solidify how you are going to act next time you encounter that scenario. Develop steps that will help you avoid the stressors. While all of this takes time, the results will be worth it. Call us if you want some help. Comment here.

Support Can Help

Rarely can a person recover from an addiction alone. Here are helpful hints for you and everyone involved in your recovery process. Listen well. Most of us are thinking about what we want to say next instead of truly paying attention. It takes real work to listen. Evaluate your progress and let others do the same. Together, identify new goals, make a plan to reach those goals, talk about how to put the plan in place and which strengths you have that will help you completely recover. All of these ideas will greatly increase your success. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Grow Through Difficulty

Every one of our difficulties, trials and sufferings can be handled with a teachable attitude. Why do I say this? Because I believe every problem we face is an opportunity to learn something we didn’t know before. Sure, it doesn’t make it any easier, but it gives our circumstances purpose.

The things we learn from trying times can become the strength that someone else will need in the future. Ultimately, our problems will help us and the others we meet if we are teachable. Be encouraged today. Comment here.

Want to Clean House?

Have you ever felt that life is dragging you down? Do you want a new one? All of us have probably wished we could sweep out the old and get a fresh start. It is good to “clean house” once in awhile. Have you noticed that the benefits of turning over a new leaf only last a little while? Eventually, little by little we go back to the way we were before. Have you ever wondered why that happens?

If you still respond to things they way you did before you cleaned house, nothing has really changed. In order to have lasting improvement, you must change. Let’s talk about. Comment here.

Sometimes You Can

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Even though this may be true, sometimes you can get a pretty good idea. Especially when it comes to recovering from addictive behaviors, your choices will reveal whether or not you have made a fresh start. Number one is your relationships; who are they with and where do they take place? Number two; are you holding yourself accountable to someone who will tell you the truth about your progress? Number three; who’s encouraging you in this journey? Finally number four; what are you using as a resource? We can help you with all of these issues. Comment here.

Recognize the Source

When you first enter recovery, recognizing the “source” of your problem is very important. If you conclude that someone else is the source of your problem and you find yourself complaining and blaming them, then your potential for enjoying a fresh start will be limited. If you conclude that you are the source, then you know that some things about you need to change. You need to be ready to embrace that change. Either way, take ownership of your own life and get help if you need it. Give us a call. Comment here.

Making a Change Requires a Plan

Ever heard the term “trip planning”? Most companies suggest that you plan each and every one of your loads you pick up. Just like trip planning, in order to make changes in your life, you must “goal set”. When you set these goals, make sure they are realistic and specific. Make sure they are measurable, and are broken down into specific action steps. Also, make sure you know the resources you’ll need to accomplish each step. Finally, make the commitment and keep the perspective that it’s a journey and there will be stops along the way. Let us know if we can help.Comment here.

Purposeful Compassion

There are several different ways of handling the suffering we see in life: One is to run away or flee the situation. Another is to deny, cover up or bury it. Still another is to have compassion or care about the people affected by suffering without considering the long-term implications of getting involved. Sometimes alleviating suffering should not be our only motivation.

The next time you’re faced with suffering, step back and look at the big picture before you react. Consider that suffering should not rule your life or alter your main purpose and goals. Then decide on your course of action. This will ensure that your response will fit your life purpose while still helping those in need. Comment here.

Impossible?

Hey driver, have you ever been caught between a rock and a hard place? Maybe you’re there right now. I once talked to a driver who was ready to give his tractor to anyone who wanted it. He’d been driving a tractor that someone gave him and things were going really well, until it broke down. The repair estimate was more than he had. The situation seemed impossible to him. But while we were visiting, he received a call from the shop. Turned out, it was just a clogged fuel filter and the repair would be a fraction of the cost. He had the money for that. Soon, he was back on the road.

I’ve heard similar stories from others, too. Of course, there are times when the problems don’t get solved so easily. But sometimes when we get into a jam that we believe is impossible, that’s just when a miracle occurs. Tell us your story. Comment here.

Overcome Challenges in Three Steps

A helpful took I’ve used to overcome life’s challenges is a simple three step approach. Step one - completely assess your circumstances or situation. Step two – develop the goals you want to achieve because of the circumstances and a plan to achieve them. Remember to think both long and short term for this step. Step three - implement the plan. I find doing these steps help me to stay organized and able to manage the growth that is needed.

Another helpful tool is to have someone who is close to you evaluate the effectiveness of your plan. They can help monitor your progress and keep you focused on the changes you need to make. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Your Motivation Will Determine Your Recovery

Recovery is never easy. There are a couple of motivations that can either help or hurt the process. A good motivator is humility or teachability. If we approach our situation with an attitude of being teachable, we will expedite the process. However, if you enter recovery with an attitude of anger, you won’t get very far. Another motivator that isn’t helpful is rehearsal or pretense. The recovery process is not a play that you can act your way through. Instead, a more helpful motivator is sincerity or honesty. Being honest about what you’re struggling with will help those working with you in your recovery. Call us if we can help. Comment here.

How Do You Respond to Suffering?

How do you respond to suffering? Before you answer, here are a few things you should consider. Suffering is. This means that it exists and always will regardless of your actions in life. Suffering seems unjust and is universal and inescapable. However, we cannot respond passively.

Now that you think about these things, let me ask you again. How do you respond to suffering? Let’s talk about it. Comment here.

Outlook Affects Outcome

If you have ever gotten help or counseling for an addiction issue, then you are what’s called a “care seeker”. Whether it was “self-inflicted” or you were forced into getting help by someone else, it probably was for the best. There are two types of care seekers; optimistic and pessimistic. If you’re optimistic, recovery goes much faster because you hold on to this mindset. However, if your pessimistic, it will take longer to recover simply for the mere fact that you don’t really believe recovery is possible. Driver, if you are seeking help, be optimistic about the outcome. It will make the entire process a lot better for you. Need help? Comment here.

What’s Your Answer for Suffering?

Do you feel that suffering is unreasonable, unjust, or irrational? It would be very easy to explain it in this manner, but the truth is we don’t always know why there is suffering. Just like it is easy to say that bad choices always lead to bad consequences, or bad consequences are the result of bad choices. However, this too is not always true. Instead, we need to approach our suffering with humility while holding on to something that is solid and secure. What or who do you hold on to? Comment here.

Essential to Recovery

Have you ever found yourself needing a fresh start? Some people refer to this process as recovery. If you’re looking for help for your recovery, there are a few standards that you should find in those offering you that help. The first thing is love. Make sure whoever is helping you does everything in love. The second thing is truth or wisdom. Sometimes, the information they offer might hurt your feelings, but it’s for your own good. Third, make sure that hope is planted deeply in your fresh start. Hold firmly to the hope that things will change. Lastly, have faith that you can restart and have a better life. Need help? Don’t Be Overcome by Life’s Unfairness

Sometimes life isn’t fair. Like it or not, it’s reality. At times, it seems some people experience more unfairness than others. Some of us must deal with serious, chronic illness -both mental and physical. Some are saddled with difficulties, through no fault of their own, that make it very challenging to simply live. So now that we have determined life isn’t fair, what are you going to do to overcome this unfairness and have the best life you can under the circumstances? Want to talk about it? Comment here.

Surviving With Lifelines

During a crisis, people feel particularly vulnerable. Crisis has a rather graphic way of stripping us of our false sense of security and ease. Our way of life or our safe little routine can be violently turned on its ear in a single moment. Ever have that happen? Is it happening now? Everything you knew to be reliable and secure is gone in an instant: your marriage, your health, your home, your job, your retirement income, etc. Do you feel vulnerable? Are you heartbroken? Are you being forced to rely on others to survive because without them you would never make it? Do you have a lifeline? Is it a stable one? Comment here.

Clark Kent and Superman

Most of us would like to think we’d be heroic if the need ever arose. In general, we may have our wits about us. We may have a lot of common sense. We may even be courageous by nature. But all that separates a hero from a regular guy is simply the lack of opportunity. And since we can’t control opportunity, we have to be hero-like every day just in case. The fact is most of the time Superman was just regular old Clark Kent. Clark was always ready and able even though he was unassuming. So keep your eyes open. Look for those times when a hero might be needed. When that happens, step up and be one. Comment here.

Dialing 911

We’re trained to dial 911 in an emergency. We take first aid, safety and emergency preparedness courses. All of them are designed to help us know what to do in an emergency. We prepare ahead of time because emergencies don’t give you time to think about how to react. If a crisis catches us off guard, it’s usually too late to figure out what to do. In fact, in the heat of the moment, a cool head has to be automatic and instinctive. It works the same way with personal crisis. The time to learn how to respond to one is before it strikes. Do you have a plan for how you’ll respond in a personal crisis? Do you know what to do? Who will you call? Comment here.

Something Old, Something New

A crisis often brings two things: First and most obvious, a new problem is created. Second and usually overlooked, an old problem is revealed. When a crisis hits, we typically spend most of our energy taking care of the immediate problem that was created by it. After all, the new problem needs attention, right. But somewhere along the line, don’t forget to address the old problem too. Even if it’s been lingering in the shadows just below the surface for years going unnoticed and untreated. Once exposed, you will need to fix the old problems if you wish to avoid dealing with a future crisis. Comment here.

The Crisis School

There are basically two ways to view a crisis. Either it’s a problem from which to run or an opportunity from which to learn. We can choose to fear it, allowing it to immobilize us. Or we can stare it down and force it to educate us. You’ve heard the expression, “What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger.” Perhaps we should say, what doesn’t kill us only makes us smarter. Develop the habit of learning from each crisis you face. Don’t run or cower from them. Instead, determine to take a valuable lesson away from every disaster or catastrophe you experience in life. Few things can teach us more than a difficult and even painful crisis. Comment here.

The Strength of a Tea Bag

Someone once said, “People are like tea bags. You don’t know how strong they are until they’re in hot water.” It’s true. A crisis doesn’t necessarily make or break you; it merely reveals you. It shows how strong (or weak) you are. In that sense then, a crisis can be a good thing – relatively speaking. While a weak person crumbles and falls apart in a crisis, a strong person recoups in the face of one and becomes stronger as a result. How do you respond to a crisis? Has some weakness been revealed by the hot water you’re currently in? What do you have to do to become stronger? Comment here.

Hitting Black Ice

We’ve all experienced the terror of hitting a patch of black ice. You were cruising along just fine, when all of the sudden, your wheels lost traction and your whole rig began to slide. It’s a scary feeling on the road. But it’s even worse in life. Have you felt that shocking sense of helplessness when you were blinded-sided by a crisis? It hit you without warning, and your life began sliding out of control. If you had seen it coming, you could’ve better prepared yourself. But you didn’t. You couldn’t have. So you try not to panic when you hit the black ice of a crisis. You just grip the wheel tightly, steer into the slide and hold on for dear life. But believe it or not, nothing in life happens by chance. Even a crisis. Comment here.
