Michigan Girl Dies

A ten-year-old girl in Michigan died after she went into convulsions that no one could explain, except for the fact that bruises on her head and side had been observed. Those investigating were hoping an autopsy would reveal much more. There is a sad history behind this young, defenseless girl’s home life. The Michigan Child Protection Services had removed her from her mom’s home a couple of years earlier after evidence of physical abuse, ranging from two sexual reports, to bleeding and black eyes, to numerous bruises, had been recorded. This kind of abuse should make your heart sink. There is absolutely no excuse for this or any type of abuse. But all too often, physical abuse goes unnoticed and unreported, and too many end up the same as this little child from Michigan. If you are aware of any kind of abuse, please let someone know. Someone’s life may depend on it. Comment here.

Money, Fame and Recognition

If you’re a baseball fan, you’ve probably heard that the Texas Rangers have been in a little financial trouble for quite some time now and were forced to file bankruptcy. They recently went up for auction and it all came down to two bidders: the current owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, and the Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan and associate. The winning bidder was Nolan Ryan in the amount of five hundred and ninety three million dollars! That’s a lot of money. Are they worth that much? Is any of it worth that much? (No wonder I have to pay so much to attend a ball game!) Where do you spend your hard earned dollars? Where is your focus when it comes to money? And should money, fame and recognition be the center of our attention? Let us know what you think. Comment here.

Human Trafficking

Here at Drivers Wellness, we have recently become aware of and have started a friendship with an organization that focuses on the tragedy of human trafficking. If you are unaware of this, human trafficking is when young underage girls are brought into the industry of sexual slavery against their will. They are brought in from other countries and kidnapped from within the United States, and forced to provide sex acts for money, which their traffickers keep. This kind of abuse is one of the most terrible cruelties, and the testimonies are sickening. If you are a trucker and see this type of activity in the truck stops you frequent, please give us a call. We will either put you in touch with the trafficking authorities, or we will contact them for you. Don’t let this type of abuse go on in our truck stops. Call us for more information. Comment here

What’s Your Favorite Book?

USA Today stated that the social network giant, Facebook, has grown to over five hundred million members. That’s a lot of people. When they first started and had a mere one million members, they conducted a survey and discovered that the two favorite books of members were the Harry Potter series and the Bible. Now that they have crossed the five hundred million members mark, they conducted the same survey and found that the same two books, Harry Potter and the Bible, are still the two favorites. What do you and your circle of friends find to be your favorite books? It could have a huge influence on what and where the conversation goes with your friends. Comment here.

Power Under Control

Maybe you are familiar with the ex-governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. His story is somewhat intriguing as we can learn a thing or two regarding the abuse he used within his office. The first thing is in regards to the abuse of power. Whether your power is within your own your truck, the management of your office or at home with your family, we should not use that power for our own glorification. Leadership should be like a bridle on a horse: power under control. The second thing is about verbal abuse. At his recent court date, Mr. Blagojevich decided not to testify for himself. Why? Because his advisors realized that his tongue would hurt more than help. Our tongues have a way of getting us in trouble. If you struggle with abuse of power, whether physical or verbal, let us help. You’ll be a much better person for it. Comment here.

Hometown and Current City

There is a section on some of the social network websites that allow members to record their “hometown” and “current city”. Obviously, the hometown is where they were born and the current city is where they now reside. The average distance between those two cities within the United States is four hundred and eighty seven miles. That’s a pretty big distance which indicates that many people have moved away from their hometowns and are now living far away from their roots. Maybe this is one of the reasons these social websites have grown to the size they are today. How far away are you from your hometown? Have you left your roots? This can be very difficult and lonely at times. Let us know your thoughts. Comment here.

If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say…

Recently, the media covered a story about a government worker who had been fired from her position because of some racial statements she allegedly had made. The accusations ran fast and wild. Within three days, this government employee was verbally abused, lost her job, and was labeled as a racist who didn’t deserve to work at that level within the government. After the entire story had been revealed, she was found not to be a racist and was actually helping those she had been accused of hurting. The moral of the story is that our tongues can cause damage and can get ahead of our minds. Let me encourage you not to speak unless you have something nice to say, and also, if it’s not true, don’t say it. Have you hurt someone with your words lately? Let us know if we can help. Crossing the Line

I will watch or listen to as many baseball games as I possibly can, since I’m such a big fan of it. My wife, however, sometimes gets annoyed with me and I need to be careful that I don’t allow my attraction to baseball to overrule my relationship with her. I recently read a story about a retired baseball player who had a temporary injunction filed against him by his wife after a domestic dispute at their home in Tampa, Florida. His wife stated that they got into an argument and her husband crossed the line between discussion and abuse. Whether it’s verbal or physical abuse, it’s all wrong. There is so much abuse within households today that goes unnoticed. Why do we treat the ones we love so badly? If you struggle with any type of abuse, please call us. Don’t let another day go by. Works Well With Others

Working with others takes cooperation and patience. One trucker was having a bad day as he was trying to get a piece of heavy equipment loaded onto his truck. He was in such a state of mind, he would not heed the advice of those trying to work with him. At the end of the day, the equipment was damaged and he was held responsible. We should be interested in finding the best way in a situation, not in having things our own way. Consider this the next time you are trying to work your way through a relationship or work issue. Travel Woes

I recently heard that some frequent airline travelers have become discontent with the direction the airline travel industry is going. They claim that many passengers recline seats in their laps, they can no longer get an in-flight hot meal, and travelers, in general, have become inconsiderate and downright rude. If they were to travel a mile in your shoes for a week, they would soon see how discontent they are with their travel woes and actually experience some real stress in their lives. Drivers face stress all day, every day, all year long; things like road congestion, certain hand gestures, no in-truck hot meal, and no sleep, just to mention a few. Stress is a real part of a driver’s life and if you need help handling it, please let us know. Comment here.

Fellowship of Friends

There are several social internet sites available today in which people have become involved to help with their need for social connection. The downside to this is that many have allowed these sites to consume a lot of their time and energy, in place of getting together and spending time with an actual person. One site has recorded over four hundred thousand events posted each day which people are involved in. If we would put half as much effort into the everyday, face-to-face relationships in our lives, we’d have a fellowship of friends that could never be broken. Who do you share the events of your life with? Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

What Are You Worth?

It’s time for the baseball trade deadline and for football players to report to their training camps. Along with this, there seems to be an all too familiar ring in the air which revolves around the all-mighty dollar. Some players want a minimum of one million dollars for the 2010 season, or they won’t play. Some have even threatened to sit out the first ten games of the football season if they don’t get what they want, and have been quoted as saying they are “so angry” for not being rewarded as they think they should be. First of all, the amount these players make is baffling, and secondly, many of them seem to be extremely self-centered. What would happen if truckers acted this way? What is the center of your focus? Do you feel you are worth more than you receive? Let us know what you think our focus should be. Comment here.

Pay Attention

While phoning a local trucking company recently, I listened to an up-to-date recording for drivers regarding safety tips, the location of a road check, and other helpful information. This is a great idea for the drivers of that particular company, if they take the time to call in, listen, and then heed the advice. Very similar to our overall wellbeing, we may hear all kinds of tips and counsel about getting enough rest, keeping our priorities straight, working through conflicts, and so on. Yet if we make the choice to ignore the good information that comes our way, we cannot expect to be well, physically or emotionally. Pay attention – it’s worth it. Comment here.

Mind Your Manners

USA Today published a story that was titled “Manners? What Manners?” It focused upon the growing number of stressors people face while flying on various commercial airlines. The first sentence of the article read “As flying gets more stressful, some passengers turn rude.” Hasn’t stress and rudeness of travelers been around for quite some time; maybe not always in the air, but most certainly on the highways? Have you witnessed this type of stress while driving? Most drivers face this every day of their lives. How do you handle it? What do you do? Let us know if you need help. Comment here.

Facebook Friends Versus Real Friends

You may or may not be a Facebook fan, but it has been documented that they list one hundred and fifteen million (yes, million) confirmed friendships each and every day. What this means is that somebody you know knows someone else, and they want to be your online friend. No matter how you slice it, that’s a lot of friends. Could it be that our world has become way too electronic, and face-to-face friendships have gone by the wayside? I’m not implying that I don’t like Facebook, however, friends that you can share with, cry with, and see face-to-face make all the difference in the world. How many up-close and personal friends do you have? Do you have someone you can talk to on a regular basis when you need help? Call us if you don’t. Comment here.

Anger Management

Do you get angry easily? Do you lash out verbally or physically when pushed too far? One must be careful about anger. Is there a just cause, such as when someone’s innocence is violated or the helpless are being taken advantage of? Oftentimes, our anger is about personal offenses; not getting our own way, having someone disagree with us, or having what we feel is our right taken away from us. This kind of anger is usually counterproductive physically, emotionally, and socially. Learn to know the warning signs of your anger before you go too far with your reactions. Need help? Travel Plans

Ah, summertime. The sun shines, things grow, and fruit is plentiful at roadside stands. It’s a great time for lemonade, watermelon, grilling, camping, water recreation and vacationing! During one vacation, my older brother was driving us from Oakland to San Diego, California to visit relatives. We got as far as Modesto when the engine overheated. It seemed as if we spent half a day waiting for the garage to pressure-flush the block and radiator before we were back on the road. If we had prepared the car properly, we’d have been spared the aggravation, time lost and an extra night in a motel. As important as it is to prepare for a vacation trip however, preparing for other things is even more important. There is one trip we all must take, yet many have made no preparation to ensure a positive outcome. Know what that is? Comment here.

The Nature of Lust

For the OTR driver there are many temptations while at the truck stop. The Internet also makes access to pornographic sites too easy. The curious look may seem harmless, but the images will grab thoughts, seduce and “hook” a person’s will. Soon, like a slave, he returns over and over again. What satisfied yesterday will not satisfy tomorrow. The viewer will want more. It’s the nature of lust. Pornography soon degenerates into an insatiable addiction. Men addicted to pornography often become adulterous or seek out prostitutes, because the wife will be unable or unwilling to comply with the demands. Marriages are destroyed and families are torn apart as everyone suffers. This is a vicious cycle; one no man should walk into with his eyes open. Please give us a call and let us help you break the cycle. Comment here.

Choose Your Style

Every driver has their own style. Drivers pick the lane they prefer to travel in, they choose when to gear down or up, and even when to turn their lights on or off. These are all choices a driver makes after considering safety, equipment requirements, and personal preference. Drivers choose their lifestyles as well. Their upbringing, environment, and what they have been taught influence this. What type of lifestyle have you chosen? Choose wisely, as your lifestyle affects not only you, but your family and those with whom you work. If you need help in this area, please give us a call. Comment here.

Recovering After an Accident

Text messages were sent back and forth on the cell phone of a 17-year-old driver moments before her sport-utility vehicle crossed lanes and slammed head-on into a truck, killing her and four other high school graduates. The media focused, and rightly so, on the tragedy for the families involved in losing young daughters and on the topic of texting while driving. But not much information was given about the driver involved. How does a driver deal with the emotional and mental stress of such a tragic accident? It will take time to heal and for the images to fade, and it will take support from family, friends, and maybe a professional. If you, or someone you know, have been involved in a serious accident, don’t try to deal with the after-effects on your own. Give us a call and let us help you get started on the road to emotional wellness again. Comment here.

Gambling: Don’t Bet On It

Let’s talk about addiction to gambling. This can be a very touchy subject because of all the legalized ways to do it these days in areas like casinos, daily lottery games, and a wide variety of sporting events. The vision of financial freedom is just around the corner with each and every wager. It always seems so close and might very well happen the next time around. To make matters worse, when you get a taste of winning, this only fuels the gambling high. I read stories about lottery winners who squandered everything away and life is now worse than it was before. Gambling can become an addiction which brings devastation to families from every neighborhood. Don’t get caught up in gambling. Break Free

Prison inmates can become what is known as ‘institutionalized’. They become so conditioned to life on the inside of a prison that they become afraid of any kind of change. When paroled, it’s hard for them to adjust to living outside on their own. Sometimes a person can get so comfortable with living in a state of brokenness that they’re too afraid to leave it. Is there something so familiar to you that you’re too afraid to change and therefore you miss out on becoming whole? It may be a toxic relationship or being forced to push the legal limits just to keep your job. In the long run, these things will cause more hurt and brokenness in your life, but you can take the proper steps now to make a change. We are available to help you take the first step to break free. Give us a call. Comment here.

Traits of Addiction

As we address many different types of addictions, many of them follow a similar downward pattern. Let me share with you the five identifiable traits of addiction:
·         The first one is your focus, much of which is directed toward that one thing.
·         The second one is tolerance. You find that you don’t mind those things that at one time had bothered you.
·         Number three is denial. You can’t see the problem and won’t recognize it even when others point it out to you.
·         Number four is consequences. Even though you endure terrible consequences, you still won’t admit you have a problem.
·         And last but not least, is painful withdraw. If you don’t get what you are addicted to, you become irritated, angry, suffer anxiety attacks, and get depressed.
Don’t let it come to this; seek help before it’s too late. Comment here.

Proactive Drivers

A good truck driver will pay attention to their surroundings so they can be proactive to avoid incidents. For instance, if you notice someone ahead tailgating, you know that you need to allow extra space or maneuver away from those vehicles. It is a potential hazard waiting to happen. A good truck driver will also pay attention to the state of their marriage and family life. They will notice if there are potential hazards that need to be addressed before leaving for a long haul and when to steer away from something that could possibly harm their marriage relationship. They will be proactive with their days off at home by planning ahead to spend time with their spouse and children. Let us know how we can help you be a good driver, spouse, and parent, and avoid problems before they start. Comment here.

What’s In Your Wallet?

The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act, which was enacted last year, will go into effect soon. What does this mean for you? One thing is that credit card companies now have a cap on what they can charge a customer for late fees and penalty charges. The new cap is twenty five dollars on all late payments. This, theoretically, will keep companies from taking advantage of cash-strapped customers, and at first glance, seems beneficial. However, it does not correct the problem of why people end up in this financial predicament in the first place. If you find yourselves making late payments or minimal payments on your credit card bills, give us a call. There is a better solution other than capping your penalties and making the minimum payment. Comment here.

Slavery In America

There is a growing problem in the United States that centers itself within the trucking industry, specifically truck stops. We want you to be aware of the tragedy of young girls caught in the human trafficking industry. Read the following testimony and call us if you want to help: “I just want to go home and live like a normal kid with friends, texting, music, and basketball games. I didn’t choose this kind of life for myself. I’m forced to do this, and I fear for my life if I don’t.  If I were your fifteen-year old daughter, which would you choose for me: a life of sexual slavery or a life of childhood freedom? You could help me by making one simple phone call to the Human Trafficking hotline: 1.888.3737.888. Give them my location, what I look like, a description of the truck I was in - anything that could help them rescue me.” Will you please be aware of the wellness of others? Comment here.

The Choice Is Yours

Addictions and other life-controlling behaviors begin when an individual makes wrong choices, which over time, progress into enslavement and physical disease. If this enslavement and disease continue, they eventually produce painful consequences that affect the mind, body, and spirit, and often hurt others as well. Keeping this in mind, make the right choices the first time around. Of course, that’s easier said than done, but even if you make a wrong choice once or twice, remember that there is forgiveness out there waiting for you. With the help of others, you can overcome these wrongful choices. Let us know if you need help making the right choice. Comment here.

Accentuate the Positive

It’s a difficult thing when there isn’t enough work for every trucker in a company. You may end up parked and sitting along the road, at home, or at your company waiting for word that a load is ready. One driver I know was asked to help the mechanics and cleaning crew during those slow times. At first this wasn’t easy to accept as he wanted to be behind the wheel doing what he was trained to do. He soon realized that if he continued to grumble and complain about this new development, it wasn’t going to help him or those around him. He began to appreciate the mechanical work because it helped him to stay up to date in that area. You may have valid things going on to gripe about. However, maintaining that kind of attitude will not help your overall outlook. Look for some positive things instead. Let us know how we can help you in this area. Comment here.

When Good Things Go Bad

According to a book written by Gerald May regarding addictions, there are one hundred and five various things that one could become addicted to. Many of them appear to be good things, such as food, shopping, exercise, work, relationships and prescriptions written by a doctor. However, all of these things can become harmful if we can’t handle them in a correct manner. The use of prescriptions obviously can go south if we misuse them. Staying in a relationship which involves some form of abuse is unhealthy, especially when you continue to try to justify it with excuses. And work could turn into a bad thing if it continually comes before our families. This shows you that any number of things have the potential to become addictive if not handled in a healthy way. Let us know if you need help figuring this out. Comment here.

Every Penny Counts

A couple of major hotel chains are now “relabeling” their locations based upon tastes and budgets. This is good to know since there are times when it’s tempting while we’re on the road to spend too much money to receive things we like, but can’t afford. Hopefully, as you travel the highways and find yourself in need of a room, you won’t spend more than you should. It would be great if we could take this approach to every aspect of our lives. I, too, would like a new truck or the latest, greatest computer, but my budget does not allow that. A budget is a saving and spending plan. Don’t overspend your budget because of the tastes you have. We need to be good stewards of our resources. Comment here.

Time to Rebuild

In a recent conversation with a driver, he was pondering if it would be better to buy a newer truck or overhaul the one he owned. It was tempting to go out looking for something newer and better. However, since he had certain attachments to his truck, he decided to rebuild the engine and get a few more years out of it. The same thing could be said about marriage. At times, when you and your spouse aren’t getting along or have become more like roommates, it may be tempting to think about having something newer or better. During these times, remember your initial commitment when you first became husband and wife. Focus on those things that first attracted you to your spouse. Try planning a date night and enjoy just being together. You both will benefit and can continue to enjoy many more good years together. Comment here.

The Respect You Deserve

If you think about it, respect and obedience follow honoring parents, and obedience usually keeps us out of trouble. We are spared the consequences of mistakes we should never make. In turn, we may become parents with confident patterns by which to guide our own children. As husbands and fathers, we are responsible for rearing sound-minded children. We can have a way of making things hard for our kids and saying things that may frustrate them, which is counterproductive. We are also to love our wives, as though laying down our lives for them and by doing so, teaching love and respect to our sons and daughters by example. Let’s be worthy of the honor we receive from our wife and kids. Comment here.

First Things First

Where does the strength come from to overcome addictions and destructive habits? What role does an individual take in one’s own recovery process? What is the counselor’s role? Who else is required to be involved to help complete the necessary steps in order to break the patterns of addiction? These are all valid questions you must ask if you plan on full recovery from any type of addictive behavior you are entangled in. Let me also encourage you, if you are struggling with an addiction, to first recognize and admit the destructive pattern in your life and start there. If you can’t accomplish this first step, everything beyond that will be null and void. Let us know if we can help point you in the right direction. Comment here.

200 Day Average

If you follow the stock market in the process of investing for your future, you’ll notice that it varies a lot from day to day. The S&P 500 has what they call a “200 day average.” The goal is to stay near or above this 200 day average, which is also used as a gauge to determine how the market and economy are doing. Recently, the S&P had declined nearly fourteen percent from this average. That has a tendency to put investors into a tail spin. Did it throw you for a loop? It is very smart to prepare for your future and set realistic financial goals, but how you prepare and where you are investing is another story. Your money will always follow where your heart is. Let us know how you are preparing for your future. Comment here.

Where Would We Be Without You?

I recently read an Internet article that stated, “Truck drivers are important to the economy and fully required to keep companies rolling. Nearly all products sold in stores across the country have been transported at least one time before reaching the final destination by a commercial truck. Without truck drivers, the economy would be in deep difficulty, to say the least.” I hope this is a good reminder to you of just how essential you and your job really are. As a driver, you have an important role in society. We appreciate you and are here with this site because we want to help you with your overall wellness. Let us know what we can do to assist you. The Gift of Intimacy

One of the largest areas of addiction is in the area of sex. Addiction to sexual pleasure quite often involves an extramarital affair, the desire for a same-sex relationship, published or internet pornography, or any type of sexual encounter with someone else or by yourself. Call me old-fashioned, but any sexual situation that takes us away from the intimacy found within a marriage relationship can and will end up stealing your self-respect, freedom, self-control, and the gift of healthy sexual enjoyment. Don’t miss out on what was intended to be special and pleasurable for you and your spouse by misusing it just to get some quick self-satisfaction. You’ll appreciate this in the long run. Detoured

The worst detour I can remember happened when I was driving on an interstate in PA, and because of a chemical spill, I was forced to take an exit that wasn’t even on my map. Cars, RV’s, vans, and trucks were everywhere; traffic was gridlocked and we literally crawled for hours. The normal hour-and-half trip took close to five. Sometimes it’s very difficult to accept it when our life gets detoured from the path we have carefully mapped out. This can happen when our kids make choices opposite of what we think is best for them, or when a company closes its doors and we are forced to start over with a new one, or when we are facing an unfavorable medical report. All of these can completely throw us off course. How do you handle detours in life? We’d like to help. Give us a call. Comment here.

Dealing With Stealing

Truck drivers deliver most or all of their goods to retail companies. Studies show that these companies lose nearly 33.5 billion dollars a year in revenue due to loss of product. Forty-three percent of this amount is due to theft. I personally have a hard time comprehending that people steal this much product. Is it necessary for people to steal in order to make ends meet, are they doing it out of fun, or just for spite? First of all, everyone knows that stealing is wrong. And secondly, if you find yourself in this forty-three percent, ask yourself why. If you are in dire need of the product, but your finances are too tight to make a legitimate purchase, let someone know. We can help point you in the right direction. Comment here.

Total Recovery

With all addiction recovery plans, the goal should be exclusive to total recovery. Anything short of this will only, with time, allow these habitual problems to resurface again in our lives. The only complete and successful treatment plan for individuals with addictions, psychological problems, life-management issues, or unhealthy habits and patterns of behavior will include working with the whole individual: spirit, mind, and body. Each and every part of the whole person must be addressed if total recovery is expected. If you have tried for recovery before and were unsuccessful, try again and address each of these areas. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Real Heroes

There are many things in life that deserve your protection. Your marriage and your spouse should be first on your list. While parked on a busy city street, I watched as a husband stepped into the street between his wife and the cars whizzing by so she could safely slip inside the door. A seemingly small act, but it demonstrated his desire to protect her and make sure she was safe. When you are on the road, you can protect your marriage by avoiding those things that tempt you to be unfaithful. When your spouse receives your verbal support on issues that come up on the home front, this lets them know that you care for their wellbeing and will help them feel secure. When your spouse knows that you will go out of your way to protect them and your marriage, you will earn their support, respect, and love. Need help in this area? Let us know. Comment here.

Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe

Many drivers use Facebook, the internet social giant. In a recent newspaper article, I read this statement: “Facebook is in the business of making money, not protecting privacy.” I don’t disagree with that, but others feel that it’s the internet company’s responsibility to keep some things private. My question is, if a person wants something to remain confidential, why post it on the internet?  Secondly, why rely on someone else to take control of personal information? Two Sides to Every Coin

Have you heard the old saying “there are two sides to every coin?” This concept also applies to every type of addiction. The first side of that coin is the physical side, which many refer to as a disease. Physical trauma is evident when the fix a person is addicted to is withheld from them. You could very well see medical complications on this side of the coin. The other side is the emotional side. This is the side that made the moral choice which led the person into a state of obsessive behavior. However, this is also the side that can make the decision to get out and away from these addictive choices. So in any recovery situation, both sides of the coin must be addressed. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Invest in Your Future

Since the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has taken place, a leader with another oil company made a statement that the industry is “not well-equipped” to handle spills in deep water. After some research, a lawmaker discovered that only .008 percent of the company profits are going towards improvements for the future. That is alarming. What are you doing to invest in the improvement of your future? Let me encourage you to prepare for your retirement. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Lonely Hearts Club

Quite often when a person is lonely, they feel sorry for themselves and put their own needs ahead of others. Because they are lonely, this only seems logical to them. They might think “if only my needs were met or my ideas were listened to, I wouldn’t feel so lonely.” This might be hard to hear, but it should be just the opposite. If you are feeling lonely, stop thinking of yourself and notice the needs of others, which will cause you to interact with them. When you reach out and care for someone else, you will feel more confident and have an inner peace which can’t take place if you are only focused on yourself. Next time you are feeling lonely, try putting others first and see what happens. Comment here.

One Thing You Can’t Live Without

No blog will be posted on Monday, July 5, 2010 in order to allow our employees to spend time with their families. We will resume blog posting on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Drivers Wellness hopes you have a safe and wonderful 4th of July weekend!

In recent weeks we’ve talked about definitions of addictions. I have a new one that I think best captures the whole meaning. Random House Publishing defines addiction as ‘the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or something that is psychologically or physically habit forming’. I believe this definition takes into consideration everything that could become addictive to us or that has the potential of becoming something we think we can’t live without. There should be only one thing in our lives that we absolutely cannot live without. Do you know what that is? Call us and find out. Comment here.

Avoid Financial Blowout

As I followed the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I read there were warning signs to the drillers indicating that something was not right. One expert stated that oil pressure readings will reveal problems before a “blowout” occurs. Obviously, the readings indicated trouble, but no one heeded the warnings. If you follow these same standards with your personal and household income, trouble will not be far behind. If you see indicators that you have a problem in your household with your income, budget or spending, please don’t wait until a “blowout” occurs before you seek help. Contact us if you see warning signs or aren’t sure what the warning signs look like. Comment here.

Bullies, Truckers, and Friends

The driving public often has mistaken ideas about truckers. One lady I spoke to had the idea that truckers were like chain swinging, bristle-bearded “gangsta” thugs. She no doubt misread the strength, and the casual, often disheveled, look of the hard working driver who has just driven several thousand grueling miles for being a thug. The movies have contributed to that image, as well. While truckers are certainly tough, they are not necessarily bullies. There is a friend to truckers who has often been misread as well. This friend is actually looking out for you all the time, and not just on the road. He’s big, but not a bully and he can help you get to your final destination safely and happily. Do you wonder who this friend is?

Hope Begins In the Dark

If you struggle with depression, especially while on the road, driving alone for hours or days can make each one seem unbearably dark and long. You may be isolated in your truck and feel as if there is no hope for brighter times ahead. One of the things I find interesting about flying is being able to rise above a cloudy, overcast sky and eventually see the sun against the blue sky. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the sun is still shining above heavy clouds – we just can’t see it. While thoughts of better days ahead may not end your time of depression, this can be something to hold onto to give you hope. Thomas Fuller said, “If it were not for hopes, the heart would break.” Where does your hope come from? Who gives you hope in dark times? Give us a call and let’s talk about this. Comment here.

No Nine to Five Schedule

I was often impressed with the ways my neighbor supported and accommodated her husband’s truck driving schedule. It wasn’t easy as he could get called out any time of the day or night to make a delivery run. She would prepare a good meal at odd times of the day so he could begin his trip with a full stomach. She reserved the days he had off so they could be together. When he only came home at three in the morning, she would often put off something as simple as doing laundry so the noise would not disturb his sleep. How do you and your family cope with schedules that are not the typical nine to five? If you plan ahead and are considerate, you will be able to support your spouse, contribute to his or her wellness, and enhance your family life. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Moving Beyond a Tragedy

As he approached the green light with his truck full of trusses, my brother-in-law was horrified to see a car pull out directly in front of him. There was no time to react or even brake, and unfortunately he hit the car broadside at full speed. He was saddened to hear that the elderly lady died days later from injuries. Understandably, he didn’t want to get back behind the wheel after this, yet he realized that staying stuck there would not help him, his family, or his company. His emotional and over all wellness depended on healing and moving beyond this tragedy. When an accident happens, especially involving drivers who are so conscientious about safe driving, it can seem impossible at first to overcome the shock and anguish. Yet with time and help from others, healing does happen. Let me encourage you to get in touch with someone to help you move beyond an unfortunate event, no matter how big or small, and allow your emotional wellness to be restored. Comment here.

Define Addiction

There are many definitions for the word addictions which range from the compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal, to being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically harmful or habit-forming. Addictions to some form of illegal substance, tobacco, or alcohol are the most commonly referred to, but there are many other things that one could be addicted to. Things such as food, pornography, and the internet are just a few. Is there anything in your life which has become an abnormally strong craving you think you can’t live without or can’t get rid of? Preventing Financial Disaster Before It Strikes

We’ve recently witnessed the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the worst oil spills in history, and there appears to be no end in sight for this disaster. I read an article in the newspaper which claimed the company responsible exercised “irresponsible drilling”. That seems pretty clear now looking back at the incident, but why didn’t anyone see the irresponsibility before the problem occurred? Let me suggest in your own finances, you take a look to make sure you are not handling your money irresponsibly. Don’t wait until a disaster strikes before you address your problem. Crushed Hopes

Every one of us hopes for things such as safety while on the road, companionship at home, job security for many years, and so on. When we hope for these things and they are taken from us, we may find ourselves becoming discouraged, bitter, and could stop having hope about anything. A driver recently told me of his difficulties with the new owner of his company. The young owner didn’t have the same values as the previous one and it was hurting the company and many of the employees. This particular driver was just hoping he could keep his job and continue working for this man. Staying optimistic when your job security is in jeopardy can seem impossible at times. If your spouse has made the choice to no longer be there for you, it’s hard not to lose heart. Yet, there is a way to have hope beyond what we know and understand now. Give us a call; we’d love to talk more about this. Comment here.

Do You Know Your Financial Forecast?

I like to follow the Dow Transports stock indexes to see how the transportation industry is doing as a whole. As you probably know, it has been down since August 2008. The first quarter of 2010 looked pretty good, and the second quarter is following the same pattern. In the last five days, it’s gone up nine percent. I recently reviewed the first fifteen companies on the list and only three were slightly down, and the others were significantly up. What do you watch when it comes to your money? Do you watch the transportation industry? Do you watch the future? What is it that has your financial, and ultimately your heart’s, interest? Let us know. Comment here.

Father’s Day

Sunday, June 20, is our day, men. It’s the day set apart to honor fatherhood. I have spoken to many drivers who either did not know their fathers or didn’t have good relationships with them. For these men, honoring their fathers may be a difficult assignment. How does one honor someone who has treated them badly? When I was in the Army, we were to salute all officers. Some of these officers I did not like. We were told to salute their position, and give them their due honor that way. That was easier said than done, but we did it. One of the Ten Commandments is to honor our father and our mother. It’s the first commandment with the promise of blessing and long life attached to it. How are you doing in this area? Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Pool or Billiards?

Many truck stops have pool tables inside the game room. My father-in-law recently told me the guys he plays pool with prefer to call it billiards. They think it sounds better. Not sure I agree with that, but I really don’t play pool that much, so I’ll go with him on this one. One thing I do know is that there are other things we label with a different name simply to make what we are doing sound more acceptable. Things like social drinking and casual sex are just a couple of them. In order to maintain a healthy emotional state, we need to check our lifestyles to make sure we are making the right choices so they don’t come back to cause us pain in the future, regardless of what we or others may call it. Are you making the right choices? Comment here.

Cave of Despair

In a recent television commercial, two cavemen were engaging one another in conversation outside of their caves. When their conversation was over, they both headed back into their individual caves. I thought about those caves being dark, cold and somewhat smothering. Our lives on the road can be a lot like a cave. Not the physical part, but the cave of despair brought on by grief or illness. Or maybe a cave of difficulties caused by poor decisions. It could also be a cave of questions and doubts that steal your joy and confidence. Whatever type of cave you find yourself living in, they all can feel very lonely, but this need not be the case. Make a choice to talk and share your struggles with someone today. There are people that will listen, and can help ease the pain and darkness of loneliness. Comment here.

Mountain Highs and Valley Lows

Traveling across the country requires driving over mountain ranges and through deep valleys. It’s a necessary part of almost any trip. Many of the mountain roads have scenic turnoffs that will allow you to pull off to the side and enjoy the view. Similar to our life journey, we may experience mountain highs when our circumstances are good and we can simply pull over and enjoy the view. But in the next moment we are hit with a valley low that cause hard times to come. Where are you right now? How do you cope with these ups and downs? Let us know. Comment here.

All Alone Again

When I served in the Army and was dropped off by a C131 in Osan, Korea, that was a time in my life when I truly experienced loneliness. I knew absolutely no one, nor was I familiar with any place in that country. My first day of driving truck also stands out to me as a very lonely day in my life. I was assigned a truck, had it ready to go, and received my first dispatch. I was out on my own, and what I once viewed as glamorous was now very scary and very lonely. What was I to do? And remember, we didn’t have cell phones then. What do you do when you are feeling lonely? Whether you’ve been driving for twenty plus years or just starting out, there will be times of loneliness. Staying On the Same Team

As you and your spouse go through the various ages and stages of parenting, there are ways you can support one another and stay on the same team. Husbands, show respect to your wives as you help them care for the kids and household chores, and allow your wife to have some time away. Also, keep in mind that just your presence in the home and in their routine shows your family that you care for them. Wives, he’ll be a better husband and father as you show respect to your husband in front of the kids and allow him to have some down time on his days off. Also, trust his way of parenting, which may be different than yours at times, especially when your children are younger, but they really will survive!  If you haven’t been on the same parenting team lately with your spouse, give us a call. Rock with Someone

Week after week, my schedule is pretty regular and I quite often travel the same route. On one particular road I drive on, I enjoy seeing an old farm house with a beautiful front porch. You know the kind I’m talking about: we all dream of quiet afternoons sitting on such a porch, relaxing with a glass of iced tea. During most weeks, I see an elderly gentleman sitting in one of two rockers on the porch, but I have never seen anyone sitting in the other one. I wonder who used to rock there with him. Even though we might long for quiet time, he must be pretty lonely. Who sits next to you? I’m not just talking about your truck or your porch; I’m referring to your life. Don’t go through life alone. Make sure you rock with someone.

Take the Money and Run

Driver, are you an honest person? Being honest is hard to do. When a cashier accidentally undercharges me for something, I could come up with several excuses to take the money and run. I’ve had to consciously choose to call the clerk’s attention to it and return the money that wasn’t mine in the first place. I have met people who boastfully brag about ways they’ve cheated or gained unfair advantage over others. It’s hard to do business and trust someone like this, isn’t it? Honesty doesn’t seem to be emphasized very much in our culture and with the media, but I believe people really appreciate when others are honest in their dealings. What do you think? Comment here.

In a Tight Spot

Have you ever been the cause of a traffic jam in the middle of a busy intersection? It can happen when we’re trying to make that sharp right-hand turn, but there simply isn’t enough room. Everything immediately stops until those around us give us the road space we need. During this time you can feel your blood pressure rise, your chest tighten, and you start to sweat profusely. This type of stress is inevitable in the trucking industry. Let us know how you deal with this kind of anxiety while on the road. Comment here.

Boxed In

While reading about the life of an inmate at a local state penitentiary, the topic of loneliness caught my attention. The small concrete walls kept this man from communicating with others, and the cell didn’t allow him to shake hands, give high fives or hug anyone. He went on to say that this was the worst thing about being incarcerated. My thoughts then turned to truck drivers. You may not live in a small concrete cell, but you do live in an eight foot by eight foot steel box for hours a day and weeks on end. This, too, can become very lonely at times. Look for ways to continue your communication with others, not only for your sake, but for theirs as well. Comment here.

Lonely Street

Do you ever wonder where loneliness comes from or why it even comes? I believe that loneliness originates from alienation. You might be wondering: alienation from who or what? As drivers, you are often alienated from your families, loved ones, friends, your companies, and from a lot of what society regards as civilization. Drivers can spend all day and night in a truck, quite often eating alone, and what little conversation they have often comes in electronic form. What or who are you alienated from? You don’t have to do it alone. Let us know if you want to share or if we can help. Comment here.

Fair Warning?

My son, a new driver, learned a hard lesson when he received a citation for pulling out of a side road in front of a stopped school bus the other day. The driver of the bus was angry and immediately called the police. A warning would have been easier to swallow, but unfortunately, the consequences involved a fine and points on my son’s record. Sometimes in life, we try and justify or rationalize what we are doing, expecting to get the easy way out, but that doesn’t always happen, does it? Let us know about something you’ve tried to rationalize instead of doing it the right way. Comment here.

No Pain, No Gain

When I was in the Army, it was common to hear someone gripe or complain about a situation he did not like, from shining boots to marching in parades. Constant discipline, however, prepares men to be ready to defend their country. It’s great to watch a sharp drill team go through maneuvers, but that kind of discipline doesn’t come without much training and practice. As a truck driver, there are many things to gripe about. Does the job get to you sometimes? Be thankful for a paying job so you can provide for your family. Has a construction zone got you tied up? Remember, that’s how a bumpy road gets smooth. The next time you are grumbling about the everyday occurrences common to a trucker’s life, consider this: you are being trained to become a great driver, a great husband, and a great father. Try being thankful for each challenge and consider it practice to become the best person you can be. Comment here.

Love Is Spoken Here

It’s very easy to notice when our kids are acting immaturely or making immature choices, isn’t it? As parents, we usually have much to say to them at these times, and probably should only say half of it. How often, though, do we offer words of affirmation when we notice them behaving or making choices in ways that show their maturity? I was reminded to do this with my son recently when he remembered, on his own, to go to his dentist appointment the same week he forgot to take money to school for lunch. We need to know when to overlook normal, childish behaviors and when to give some much deserved encouragement for making mature decisions. Your positive comments to your child will help build their character and self-esteem, help you to have a good relationship with them, and maybe most importantly, can strongly demonstrate your love to them. Comment here.

All Summer Long

No blog will be posted on Monday, May 31, 2010 in order to allow our employees to spend time with their families. We will resume blog posting on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Drivers Wellness hopes you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

Many of us have been looking forward to the warm days of summer. Now that they are upon us, we trust you have prepared your truck ahead of time by making sure your AC is working properly, the fluid levels are where they need to be, and you simply are ready for the dog days of summer. If you wait until something goes wrong in the heat, then you might suffer by possibly being stuck along the interstate on a 90 degree day. A driver’s wellness works the same way. You need to be prepared for the heat when it comes. Don’t wait, it will only hurt you. Be proactive, not reactive to your emotional wellbeing. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Only One Way

Driver, you know if you take the wrong road, you will not get where you intended to go. When I was working a job during my college days, I had a delivery to make from Emeryville, CA to Concord, CA. I took off on the wrong road and was headed toward the wrong town, but thought I was going the right way. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I had envisioned another town, and was heading for that destination. I was out of route, late, and had to back track. In life, there are many roads we could take, but only one way to the Truth. Which way have you taken? Want to talk about it? Comment here.

If No One Would Listen

Do you know when someone is really listening to you? They usually make eye contact, won’t interrupt or change the subject, and you can sense they are empathizing with what you are saying. How well do we listen to our kids? We should offer them the same consideration we try to show to the adults in our lives. I can remember when my mom would repeat something I said, just to show me that she heard me. A child, no matter how young, will know when someone is paying attention and really listening to what they are saying. This kind of consideration shows them that they are valued and important, and will benefit your relationship with them as they grow older. It’s never too late, no matter what age your children are, to begin actively listening to them. Start today. Comment here.

Take It Easy

After surgery, I was surprised to find that the recovery took a little longer than I expected. Some days were better than others as I tried to take it easy and not over do things. I was reminded more than once to rest, especially when I tried to push myself too hard. It’s hard to be idle when there is work to be done, but it’s wise to take time to recoup when we need to. Driver, are you pushing yourself too hard? Take some time to relax. Add some down time to your schedule. Comment here.

Choose Your Battles

Each stage of parenting has its own challenges, and one is not really harder than the other, just different. However, I have found that parenting teens has very unique trials. I have stepped onto the battle field with my teens over issues such as plans, movies, friends, music, and cell phones, just to name a few. Some of the best advice an older friend has given me is to pick and choose my battles carefully. Are issues such as the style of their hair as important as where they are spending their time? Not in the long run. Our relationship with our teenagers is more important than winning every battle. Let go of the minor issues, but stand firm on those that will impact their well being and future. Are you stuck in a power struggle with your teen? Give us a call. We can help. Comment here.

Help Stop the Nightmare

As we address your emotional wellness on this site, we want you to know that sometimes it’s also about the wellness of others. Read the following testimony: “I am not a prostitute or a lot lizard. I’m a fifteen year old kid. ‘Danny’ took me from my home to rescue me from my step-father. Only I went from one nightmare into another. I didn’t choose this kind of life for myself. ‘Danny’ forces me to do this, and I fear for my life if I don’t. When you see me being passed from truck to truck, please don’t pretend you don’t notice what is going on. Phone the Human Trafficking hotline: 1.888.3737.888 and give them my location, what I look like, a description of the truck I was in - anything that could help them rescue me.” Driver, be aware of those around you. Let us know what you think. Comment here.

Break the Cycle

Have you ever said something to your spouse that later or maybe as soon as it came out of your mouth, you wish you could take back? Keep in mind this is not the end of the world and by taking some steps in the right direction, things can get better. The first step to take is to ask for forgiveness. When that happens, you can then begin to work toward rebuilding your relationship. Secondly, use your past failures to help you learn and prepare for the future. Take what you’ve learned and apply it the next time you find yourself in a similar situation, because unfortunately you may end up there again. If you want different results, you can’t keep doing the same old thing. Need help in this area? Comment here.

Time Is On Your Side

Spending quality time with our kids in the midst of busy schedules today can be tricky, especially for a driver’s family as days can go by with little to no contact. With some strategic planning on your part, this can be a successful area for you and your family. Take advantage of those days off and plan to do something simple with your kids such as taking them to the store to pick out their favorite ice cream or playing ball in the back yard. I love the memories I have of pitching and catching with my dad throughout my growing up years. Even as a teenager, it helped us to connect. If you want to strengthen your relationship with your kids and build memories into their lives, give them the gift of your time. It will be one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Breaking Down the Walls

It has been two years since I’ve talked to my sister since there is a wall between us which involves her son, my nephew. I miss her very much and am hoping for reconciliation one day when she’s ready. In the meantime, I am trying to remember the good things about our relationship instead of focusing on the negative. Is there someone in your life you are separated from and they’re not ready for reconciliation yet? The Greatest of These Is Love

Have you ever had your spouse do something which continually goes against what you believe is best? Typically when spouses differ on any type of issue, it’s time to sit down and hash it out until an agreement can be reached. Sometimes this takes a while and can be done very loudly, but hopefully a compromise will be found. What do you do if this doesn’t happen? Keep this in mind: we don’t always get what we want. Sometimes we need to accept what our spouse wants regardless of our own desires or what we think is best. The love we have for our spouse and the way we treat them should always override any issue. Remember, love is the greatest thing of all. Comment here.

Speak No Evil

How do you talk to your spouse? How would you like to be talked to? I have found, but not mastered, that speaking to your spouse in a way that builds them up always works the best. The opposite of this is to speak to them in ways that tear them down. This will always hurt your significant other and your relationship in deeper ways than you might think. When you are in a heated discussion, this concept can be very difficult to remember. The next time you find yourself toe to toe with the one you love, try taking a step back, a couple of deep breaths, and remember to speak in ways that will bless them, not crush them. Both you and your spouse will appreciate it in the long run. Comment here.

New Car, Dead Horse

A young driver was very happy about purchasing his first car. He hadn’t even made his first payment yet when he rolled it over and totaled his prized possession. Peace According to U2

Many entertainers sing about peace. U2 is one that has a passion for world peace, and has written songs about it. Are you familiar with his lyrics? “Heaven on earth, we need it now. I’m sick of all of this hanging around. Sick of sorrow, I’m sick of the pain, I’m sick of hearing, again and again, that there’s gonna be Peace on Earth.” Another singer, Van Morrison, wrote these lyrics: “You see me on the street, well you guess I’m doing fine. Oh, but its fantasy, baby, almost all the time. I’ve got to get away by myself. Oh, the way it’s going, soon be needing help, ‘cause I’m just a man doing the best I can. Don’t you understand? I just want some Peace of Mind.” These lyrics speak to the way many of us feel at times. Do you long for peace on earth? Do you have peace of mind? Let us help. Comment here.

Four-Wheel Drive...Not!

Recently my nephew tried to use his four-cylinder car as a four-wheel drive vehicle on a rugged, mountain road. Needless to say, the road won and his transmission lost. It was an expensive lesson and he is still paying the price for that decision. Why do we sometimes use the wrong means to try to reach a goal? It usually costs us more in the long run. Think about your life, finances, marriage, and parenting. Evaluate if you are using the wrong methods to get where you’d like to be. Comment here.

Mother's Day

This Sunday, May 9, is Mother’s Day. Driver, do you have good memories of your mother? Be thankful for those memories. Not every driver has the privilege of knowing his or her mother. My mother had twelve kids, but she had time for all of us. She was always home until we moved from the foothills of California’s High Sierra to Oakland, California, and began working in one of the two grocery stores that my father had bought. She was a loving mom, but I saw her tough side when she had to deal with disagreeable customers. Sunday has been set aside to honor our mothers. Is your mother still living? Give her a call or send her some flowers. How about the mother of your kids? Are you teaching them to honor their mother? Make Sunday a great day for the moms in your life. Comment here.

National Day of Prayer

I have met many sincere men and women drivers who pray consistently. Prayer makes a difference. It can cause miracles to happen, change people’s hearts, and protect from evil. Prayer can even deliver a nation from the brink of disaster. In the recent past, former presidents have recognized the importance of prayer to national life, and have declared a National Day of Prayer. Today is the National Day of Prayer in the United States. This is a great opportunity to ask God to preserve our Nation, so let’s remember to pray. Comment here.

What’s Your Role?

I’d like to share with you what I believe the “roles” in a marriage should be. Let me state, first of all, that just because there are different roles, it doesn’t make one better or greater than the other. Just like the Armed Forces, there are different ranks, and as each one works together to complete its own responsibilities, the larger goal gets accomplished. Husbands, you are the leader in the home, so lead properly, not selfishly. Wives, you are the helper, so help accordingly, as to accompany your husband. Together you can get it done. Comment here.

Finding Peace

My father and I are very close and have been for many years now, although it wasn’t always this way for us. When I was a teen I caused him many sleepless nights and a lot of aggravation. He has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the outlook is not so bright. Our family got together and made some very tough decisions, always trying to keep the welfare of Dad first. Our main concern being that he will be as peaceful as possible during the remaining days he has left. So far this plan has worked well. My father is at total peace through all the surgeries and doctor appointments. No one looks forward to this day, but it comes for every one of us. Where do you find your peace during difficult times such as these? Please let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Conflict Is Inevitable, Combat is Optional

Conflict in marriage is as sure as sparks flying up from a fire. When a marriage is new, things like money, having kids, a mortgage, and other issues crowd in and make it hard for newlyweds to see eye to eye. As a marriage matures, different difficulties come up as kids get older, your income grows, and new issues, such as parenting, materialism, and retirement investing come into play. The question is not whether or not you will have conflict in your marriage, but rather what you will do about it. Let us know how you handle your conflicts. Comment here.

Gridlock

During rush hour, highways can be a bumper to bumper crawl for what seems to be hours on end. Many of us are on a tight schedule that must be met and really don’t have time for stop and go traffic - not to mention the workout on our clutch leg. When the congestion finally lets loose and gets rolling, then vehicles are everywhere and moving at a much faster speed. One little mistake by anyone can cause an accident. This happens day in and day out in a driver’s life. Sometimes it can seem to be total chaos all the time. What do you do to find peace in all this chaos? Maybe a better question would be: do you have any peace in all this chaos? We can help. Comment here.

Radical Mercy

Recently my nephew wanted to help by backing my car into the garage, and we all know how difficult backing can be. We both felt sick when he accidently hit the work bench and did hundreds of dollars of damage to my recently purchased car. He felt terrible and wanted to pay for the repairs, which would have meant more loans for this college student. It was decision time: show mercy or let him pay the price? We all make mistakes and sometimes we just need someone to extend grace to us. Has anyone ever done this for you? We’d love to talk more about this. Comment here.

All Night Long

It really was no different than any other delivery when I had to travel to Chicago to make a special delivery. The process got started very late and it was an extremely long night with absolutely no time to sleep. The delivery was scheduled for five o’clock in the morning and it was on time. As I sat there exhausted, I listened to a couple of birds singing as the sun came up. It was very peaceful to just be still, watch the sun and listen to those birds sing, even though the night had been very long. What is it you look to when your nights are long? What do you turn to when the days are chaotic? Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Walk With Personality

While out on the road, you run into many different types of personalities. Maybe it’s during pickups and deliveries, or maybe it’s right in your own dispatcher’s office. Some people are more outspoken, while others are quieter in their interactions. What makes one person mad can easily be overlooked by another. We all have been created alike physically, but it’s good that we have different temperaments. It keeps life interesting! Try to accept the personality differences you encounter in others. It’s beneficial to do this as it helps to reduce stress. Think about this the next time you are interacting with someone who is different than you. Comment here.

Give Peace A Chance

I read a story about a painting contest where artists were challenged to try and capture “peace” the best way they could. One artist painted a tranquil lake at sunset, while another painted a home covered with a new blanket of snow, untouched by anything. The winner of the contest, though, painted a picture of a very powerful waterfall raging and splashing about, while off to the side a mother Robin was sitting with her young in a small nest. Your life may look like the lake at sunset or it may look like the raging waterfall at times, but what do you do and where do you go to find “peace”. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Create an Awareness of Your Habits

Every Saturday morning, bright and early, when I was growing up my dad would take me to the doctor to get an allergy shot. I was extremely allergic to trees, flowers, pollen, cats, dogs and many other things Since then, I’ve learned how to deal with my allergies and now know what to avoid and when to avoid it. Some of our bad habits are similar to allergies. They can cause us to not feel good at times, and they seem to come around on a regular basis. Our habits can be like allergies, but if you learn what areas you need to avoid and get to know certain times they seem to appear, handling them will be easier, and you’ll feel much better. Slightly Off Course

As my daughter and I were traveling recently, she accidentally hit a button on our GPS and changed our destination. Neither of us realized it at the time. While we were still traveling in the same general direction, our specific location was miles away. Something didn’t seem right when I began to notice city lights and tall buildings; I then realized we were slightly off course. Do you feel this way sometimes with life? You know you’re going somewhere, but aren’t sure you are heading in the right direction? Give us a call. We’d like to talk about this with you. Comment here.

What Does Your Bumper Sticker Say?

It’s hard not to notice the variety of bumper stickers on vehicles today. Everything from yellow ‘Support Our Troops’ ribbons to soccer balls to political slogans to ‘I Love My Dachshund’ stickers. People like for others to know of their hobbies, likes, dislikes, and interests. Displaying these stickers is one way to do that. We all want to be known. What do you want others to know about you? At the Car Wash

After many weeks of snow, it was great to have a warm, sunny day to get my filthy car to the car wash. As I waited in line, I watched the truck in front of me go from grimy gray to shiny silver. As my car was getting sudsy and clean on the outside, I started to notice how dirty the inside looked. This is similar to our personal life. We may be struggling with something we don’t want others to see, but continue to do all kinds of things to look good on the outside: nice clothes, nice car, the right words, or a fake smile at the right time. If you have something you are keeping inside and need to talk to someone, please contact us. We’d love to help. Comment here.

Get By With A Little Help From Your Friends

I have one friend from high school I occasionally keep in touch with and my closest friend has been a part of my life for the past nineteen years. Maintaining friendships takes time and effort. Emotional Activity

A physical wellness coach once said “Build physical activity into all your work and play.” I agree with that. My own doctor has told me when I go to stores, restaurants, truck stops, etc., to park in the furthest spot away from the building and walk. Well, let me suggest that we build “emotional activity” into all our work and play. How can we do that? Always be on the lookout for ways to address the thoughts, struggles, and difficulties you are having. Come up with a plan you can follow to exercise your mind. Give us a call if we can help. Comment here.

Crushed but Not Destroyed

I was recently working on my vehicle when I smashed and cut my thumb on a sharp piece of glass. It very quickly bled and soon began to bruise. The first thing I did was apply pressure and look for a bandage. I was prepared and had some close at hand. It’s good to be prepared. What if it had been a bruised heart? There are times when we get hurt, but it’s on the inside. What do you do? Do you have any ‘bandages’ nearby when your heart gets bruised? Be prepared. Comment here.

How Good Of a Father Are You?

My college graduation gift to my son was to take him on a train trip across the country. Due to family circumstances, it was just the two of us. We had a wonderful trip riding the California Zephyr for three days and sleeping in a Pullman car. At one point during the journey, my son said to me, "You know, Dad, this is the longest time I have been with you that I didn’t get in trouble.” Wow! How had I been treating my son? What kind of father had I been to him? Happily, we now have a great relationship, even though he and his wife live several thousand miles away and we mostly communicate by phone and email. My son grew up before I realized I could have done it differently. Driver, what kind of father are you? What will you do differently? Beware of Overload

Drivers should be on constant alert regarding the weight of their trucks. Overweight or overload can be damaging to the highways and your equipment…not to mention your wallet. Regarding our physical wellness, experts will tell you to look for ways to keep your weight down and to push, pull or lift to keep your muscles fit. The same also holds true for our emotional wellness. Work your mind in a positive way so that you can keep your mind from overload. Think about those things that are true, honorable, right, and pure. This will keep you in excellent condition. Comment here.

Garbage In, Garbage Out

Dieticians tell us to eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy and protein. If we do this, along with monitoring our snacks, we will look and feel healthy. The same thing applies to what we allow into our hearts. What you let in is what you become. When you allow unhealthy things to enter your heart and mind, do you notice things about yourself that aren’t so appealing? Don’t let the garbage in, keep it clean. Comment here.
