Porn is Addictive

The word addiction means “to be dependent upon” or “to be held in bondage to.” Our society very clearly identifies drugs and alcohol as potentially addictive substances. I think there is one even more powerful - pornography. Some of the symptoms of this addiction are watching pay-per-view sex movies, purchasing pornographic material either on the web or in stores, frequenting nude dancing establishments and calling 900 numbers. If you have any of these symptoms, get some help immediately. Give us a call. Comment here.

Fidelity

Fidelity, which means faithfulness, is a word I haven’t heard in a long time. It can be applied to marriage, your purpose in life, the company that you serve, or your relationships. I would like to talk about marriage. Today, we hear so much about couples breaking their marriage vows. The inevitable divorce will mean the emotional rending apart of husband and wife. The process is horrific and both will get hurt in the end. Children suffer the most, often feeling they are the cause of their parents’ problems. This is not the way marriage is supposed to be. Contact us. Comment here.

Knowing Is The First Step

We have talked about using a budget to manage your money. Before you can accomplish this correctly, you must first know the condition of your current finances. Do you know where all of your money is going? Start keeping track of every penny you spend each month. Then analyze your spending habits by asking the following question: Are there items that can be cut out of your monthly bills to reduce the overall total? Are there any unnecessary items you are buying that don’t really need? Is there a cheaper way to get the same result? You may find that you were losing money to trivial items that could help you pay off some debt or go into your savings plan. If so, make those changes and continue on from there. Don’t know where to turn? Let us help you. Comment here.

How do you put up with all the evil out here?

That was the opening question a driver once put to me. As drivers, we become aware of much evil. People lie and cheat and think nothing of it. Some drivers run with two log books. People cheat on their spouses, thinking they can get away with it. And we hear of the cases where a few steal the life savings of many. Every day we hear about the bad “news”— the failure. We could feel overwhelmed and depressed over it all, especially if some of the results of evil happen to touch us personally. There is an answer to all this. We can help. Contact us. Comment here.

A Six Letter Word

I know that some four letter words are bad, but here’s a six letter word that many of you feel is terrible: budget. However using a budget accomplishes two different things. It helps us determine our financial priorities and it instills discipline to achieve those priorities. If you’re like me, you probably don’t like either one of these ideas. I promise you’ll like the results. There are a number of different budgeting plans and techniques available to choose. Pick the one that is the simplest, and works best for you. Call us if you need help with a budget today. Comment here.

A Random Addiction Test

Addictions come in many different styles. In the trucking industry, the obvious ones are drugs and alcohol for which there are random monthly tests for. What about pornography? Here’s a random test for you. Do you find your wife less sexually satisfying than you used to? Do you lock your eyes on attractive women and check them out? Do you seek out arousing pictures or R or X rated movies? Do you visit porn sites on the internet? Do you have a secret sex stash you can’t revel to others? If so, you might be addicted. Whose Team Are You On?

When I was growing up, I played a lot of little league baseball. Every spring, I eagerly awaited the tryouts thinking of nothing else but the competition. Afterwards, we’d be picked to play on a certain team. You could be a great player but if you weren’t picked for a winning team it seemed like the end of your life. At least, it was the end of your season. I don’t play baseball like I once did, but I still have a team that means everything to me. It’s my family. Your family can make mistakes, and maybe sometimes not even show up, but they are still your team. Families just like teams need a great coach. Hey Coach, are you in the game? Comment here.

Divorce Is Lazy

A man marries a woman and everything is great. After some time, they begin to argue. He is gone from home weeks at a time. She never expected him to be gone all the time. It isn’t any easier for him. His kids are growing up without him. He isn’t living up to what she expected. She was never as demanding as she now is.

When frustrated, mates often become emotionally or verbally abusive toward each other. When they reach an impasse, they decide that the way to solve their problems is to divorce. WRONG. Running away may feel like opening a steam valve so the pressure can be released at first. But divorce really gives everyone involved heartbroken, torn souls and tremendous confusion especially for the innocent children involved. Instead of taking the lazy way out, get counseling and learn to solve your problems together. Marriage is a covenant between two people, “till death do us part.” There is possibly a missing element that could help you honor your covenant. Want to know more? Contact us. Comment here.

Short-sighted Priorities Exact a High Price

In 1979, the company where I worked transferred me 2,000 miles to the city I’m living in now. On the “Big Moving Day”, I spoke with the driver (who owned his own rig), and found out he made $81,000 the previous year--three times what I was making! It was an eye opener for me on how well an o/o could do. He was fast, too. I had to fly in order to be at our new house when he arrived with our furniture. Well, the other side of that gilded coin is the risk taken by an o/o. I got to Ohio as scheduled, but he was a couple days late because he broke down on the way.

These days, I hear more tales of woe than easy living and I think about that driver who pushed himself so hard and always worked to have “just a little more.” I wonder what it cost him, especially with so many o/o’s struggling to make ends meet in our current economy. We can spend all our lives reaching for the gold ring and in the end, find it is made of brass. What are you reaching for? Want to talk about it? Contact us. Comment here.

How much are you worth?

I remember watching the film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” where George, the lead character is told that he was worth more dead than alive. After contemplating the insult through a depression haze, fogged over by a couple drinks, George attempts suicide. Enter Clarence, an Angel sent to show George he is valued and loved. In the end, George realizes his life has value that is richer than all the money in the world. Driver, do you ever feel worthless like George did? The dispatcher expects you to fly low, the shipper expects you to be there when he is ready to ship, the receiver wanted it yesterday, DOT wants to inspect your log book and DOT the truck. On top of all that, you have a family back home that needs you to be there. Sometimes, the demands and expectations of others can make you feel worthless. Don’t forget that you are valuable and loved, whether you know it or not. We can help. Comment here.

Lower Your Consumer Debt

Do you have any debt? Studies show that many Americans have ten to twenty thousand dollars in consumer debt. Consumer debt comes from purchases that are consumption based versus investment based. A mortgage is considered an investment debt while credit cards, auto payments or a Snap On accounts are viewed as consumer debts. Consumer debt can weigh heavily on you and your family if not kept in check. Consider cutting your credit cards in half, stay out of shopping malls, and create a budget (and stay on it). Also the next time you feel led to make a purchase, ask yourself “Do I really need this?” Then delay the purchase for 30 days and ask yourself again. Chances are you’ll discover the answer is “No.” Call us if you need help managing your debt. Comment here.

Small Indulgences Can Lead to Big Problems

Small indulgences don’t seem to be very harmless on the surface, but they can become huge problems. Nude pictures here, a porn picture there, a girl here, a girl there, a billboard here, a billboard there, get the idea? I’m rich! You can be, too.

Some years ago, I got adopted into a family. My benefactor has resources that seemed to be endless. The neat part of it is that I am receiving benefits in one way or another all the time. I don’t mean that money, grand houses and lots of stuff are raining down upon me, yet when I look around me, I have more than enough. What I’m really talking about is protection, direction, and a deep love that is not available anywhere else. My benefactor is looking to adopt others, too. Want to know more? Contact us. Successful Liars Have Good Memories

Many drivers tell me that their log books are fairy tales. Some say it’s impossible to make money when running an honest log book. They’re not alone. Numerous surveys and studies have been done to test people on their integrity. Most people admitted that they would cheat to gain an advantage. Problem is when we tell one lie; we then have to tell another to make our stories fit. Abraham Lincoln said, “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar.” That’s because when the lies fall apart, it’s usually with disastrous results. Whatever happened to good old honesty? It is still the best policy. Would you like to be truthful? We can help. Comment here.

Righteous Anger

Is it ever right to be angry? How about when that four wheeler who cuts in and out of traffic without leaving you enough space, when someone in the express line ahead of you with a basket filled far above the “express limit” or whenever you see someone not playing by the rules? Are these times when it’s ok to get angry? There is such a thing as righteous anger. However, most of the time my anger does not fit that category. Righteous anger usually occurs when there is an injustice committed against someone who is not connected to me. So, if I become angry because someone offended me personally, that’s probably not righteous anger. In fact, people who get angry easily usually don’t have righteous anger. Even with righteous anger, we still must be careful with our conduct. Want to talk about it? Comment here.

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

When my kids were young, they used to come running to greet me whenever I got home. Even though my wife didn’t come running, she missed me as much, if not more. It is a great feeling knowing that you’re missed that much. Who do you miss the most when you are out on the road? Do you think about your loved ones a lot? Do they think about you? Being by ourselves often causes us to think about the relationships that mean the most. Cherish those relationships and you’ll continue to grow close to those who you love. Comment here.

Pay Yourself First

Do you have money stashed away for unplanned emergencies like unexpected hospital bills, new car tires, your children’s college fund, your retirement? One way to get ahead financially is to save a little money from every paycheck to cover unplanned expenses before you pay the rest of your bills. It’s called paying yourself first and some financial experts recommend it be at least 10% of your income. Now, if you’re like most of us, you probably pay everything else and then wait to see what’s left to decide how much to save. Chances are there usually isn’t anything left. So pay yourself first even if it’s a small amount. You’ll discover that you never missed it and you’ll form a good financial habit. You’ll be glad you did. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Garbage In, Garbage Out

We’ve talked about paying attention to what you allow to enter your thoughts and your eyes before. You’ve probably heard the saying “garbage in, garbage out.” The saying describes a progressive pattern. Whatever enters your eyes or ears, moves into your thoughts and then drops into your heart. Eventually, it all comes back out of your heart into your life and touches the lives of others around you. You can guard your heart by first guarding your eyes, ears and thoughts. Start today. Avoid Costly Mistakes by Making Small Changes

When it comes to handling money properly, there are many ways to avoid making simple mistakes. For example, do you purchase a new car every couple of years? It’s actually cheaper to maintain your current car than it is to purchase a new one. Also, don’t over spend on things like your cell phone package. Ask yourself if you really need some of those options you’re currently signed up for. Think about other items like your cable bill. If you’re out on the road all the time, do you really need the large cable package you currently have? Did you know that studies show people that don’t use credit cards spend less? So consider eliminating or freezing your credit cards in a huge block of ice even if you don’t carry a balance. Last but not least, look for ways to have fun for little or no money. Get creative and spend less. You’ll be glad you did. Call us if you need help. Comment here.

It Takes Maturity

I get a real charge out of watching new drivers enter the truck driving industry. Now, not all of these drivers are young in age and many of them have very little idea what this career holds for them. There are things one can only learn from the school of hard knocks. Time spent behind the wheel alone can provide drivers with the opportunity to become mature in the world of trucking. You will be faced with challenges that will require you to make the right decision at just the right time. Are you prepared for that? Let us help. Comment here.

An Attitude of Gratitude

Everyone has things to be thankful for. However if we’ve never developed the habit of gratitude, we may neglect to notice them because we’ve set our sight on something else. Regrettably, we can take a lot for granted. Cultivating gratitude can improve our attitude, change how others feel about us and even reduce stress in our daily life. Gratitude can even impact our future. Even when things do not go well for us, we should even learn to be thankful. I don’t mean that you should be thankful for a blowout, but you can look for what to be thankful for in spite of the blowout; the truck did not turn over. So cultivate gratitude, you just might be thankful for it someday. Comment here.
