Practice Helps Us Learn
2009-09-30 21:34:00
Sometimes lessons are hard to learn. In my lifetime I have been to too many seminars, classroom sessions, and other venues where we are expected to learn. It is easy to sit in a classroom and hear the lecture, or watch the video, and agree with the message that is being presented. It is another thing to put into practice what we hear. We go to a safety meeting and see the logic of the safety issue being discussed. Then we get out on the road and do what we’ve always done. Does that make sense? We have not really learned anything until we put it into practice. That’s true about safety on the road and safety on the road of life. Let’s talk about it. Send us a comment. Comment here.

There Is A Lot More
2009-09-29 13:26:00
We’ve all read about or know of people who either made it to the top of their corporation or own their own corporation. Whenever I would read about someone like this, I wish I could try having it all for awhile. The fact is it is not possible to “try it.” It requires a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice. People at all levels have literally given their all to reach their goals and end up with disappointed expectations and empty victory. I imagine they’ll eventually wonder when they look at what they’ve amassed and ask, “Is this all there is?” Balance is wisdom. Riches and power can provide comfort, but they cannot guarantee happiness or satisfaction. The pursuit of riches is not all there is to life. There is much more. We can help. Comment here.

Guard Your Thoughts
2009-09-28 08:49:00
Truck drivers spend a lot of time in driver’s seat and consequently have a lot of time to think. What do you ponder about as you drive the seemingly endless highways day in and day out? Do you constantly look down at the 4 wheelers to see who is sitting in the seat and if you can see anything sexy? What kind of music is playing on your radio? Is that healthy for your mind? Ever hear of this saying “Thoughts become actions, actions create habits, habits build character?” Your character reveals who you are to those around you. Let me encourage you to start guarding what enters your mind just like you guard what enters your truck. You’ll be able to have a healthier life. If you want help, just let us know. Comment here.

Say “Thank You”
2009-09-25 16:16:00
Has someone ever told you “Thanks” after you have done something for them? Remember how nice that was? Many times I have received a “Thank you, sir” after holding the door open or when I’ve stepped aside in a narrow aisle in the truck stop. There is the other side of the picture, where someone walks through as if you owed it to them. I have even heard an exchange between two drivers where one tried to correct the other by asking where his “Thank you” was. The other driver answered by saying, “If you’re waiting for a ‘Thank you,’ then you really didn’t do it out of the kindness of your heart.” Sounded like a quick comeback, but it was really just an excuse. Saying thanks to those who help us will go a long way to improving our outlook, relationships and the quality of our days. Share you appreciation with someone today.

Someone’s Daughter
2009-09-24 21:18:00
We’ve all had long days when we drive late into the night until we stop at a truck stop to get something to eat. After finally sitting down in the restaurant, a smiling waitress comes over to take your order and you think she is the best looking thing you’ve seen all day. Suddenly your mind is running rampant with sexual thoughts towards this young lady. Stop right there! This is someone’s daughter. Personally, I have three of them and wouldn’t want anyone thinking about my daughters that way. Maybe you have daughters or granddaughters too. Think about that the next time you are alone at dinner time and the waitress comes to take your order. If you feel overwhelmed with thoughts like this, we can help. Comment here.

Hope for Tomorrow
2009-09-23 07:51:00
Ever have a bad day? Sometimes a day just doesn’t go well. Any number of things can wreck a day, like getting to a shipper and his load isn’t ready, so you end up losing a whole day or your truck breaks down and you have to wait for hours for a service/tow truck; maybe you have rough words with your dispatcher or your receiver has had a bad day and is dumping his attitude onto you. Sound familiar? That kind of day can leave one all out of sorts. But there is always hope for the next day when today’s problems are left with today. There is good reason for such hope. We can help. Economy got you Down?
2009-09-22 14:57:00
Many have seen good jobs disappear in this economy. Some drivers were working one day and then the company closed its doors the very next. Other drivers had their trucks taken, and were left stranded on the road. When you’re faced with joblessness or the loss of income, anxiety can understandably take over. You may be trying to get home, wondering what you are going to do to support your family, racking your brain to come up with a new game plan or checking your bank account to see if you have enough to make it. These are all real concerns. However, to get your sense of balance back, the first thing you need to do may seem counterintuitive. Contact us to learn more. Comment here.

Cultivate Contentment
2009-09-21 15:01:00
Gripe, gripe, and gripe. When I was in the Army, there was a saying that if the troops are not griping, they are not happy. However, discontentment can sour an otherwise good job or good assignment. Hold it, rewind. You mean that griping can make a job seem harder? Yes. The reality is that every job requires work, inconvenience, effort and usually there are some things about it that we’d prefer not to do. What a difference it would make if we could find contentment no matter what job we have. Many drivers love driving truck. There are some who do not, some for good reason. No matter which group you are in, having a positive attitude would make it easier to do your job. Want to learn more? We can help. Comment here.

Guard Your Eyes
2009-09-18 10:36:00
I often see trucks with a little sticker on the window bearing a green lizard and a red anti symbol over it. This sticker is in effect saying “No” to lot lizards (prostitutes who hang out at the truck stop or terminal soliciting). To each and every one of you who has taken this stand, I applaud you! You are in essence telling a prostitute not to enter your truck because you do not want their business. Do you take the same stand with how you use your eyes? Do you look at the magazines behind the counter? Do you look for short skirts or no shirts in the passing vehicles below while driving? Do you sneak a peek down the waitress’ blouse? What do you allow to enter your eyes? In order to overcome the problem of pornography, you need to guard your eyes every second of every day the same way you do your truck. If you are struggling with this, we can help. Comment here.

Alone in a Desert
2009-09-17 11:57:00
When I was in the military driving a fuel tanker, I experienced one of the loneliest times of my life. I was making a drop in the middle of the Mohave Desert in southern California using only grid coordinates to guide my path. That night I sat there in the desert all alone with no one in sight. You can see for a long way out there. Eventually the convoy showed up and I was back on my way. Truck driving is often like the Mohave Desert, you are all alone with very little direction on how to live your life. If you want life direction, I guarantee someone will show up. Don’t forget, we are here to help you with that. Give us a call.Comment here.

Everybody’s Doing It
2009-09-16 15:07:00
Have you noticed what happens when a celebrity expresses their opinion on an issue? Even though they have no expertise about the matter, we listen to what they say and agree with them just because they are famous. In fact, it seems the public will act according to the star’s opinion, even if the star is wrong. Since everyone seems to think the same way about it, we figure it must be ok. But sometimes, what the “herd” is doing is not ok. In fact, it could be dangerous, immoral or unethical. Remember the days when it was considered chic to smoke. Celebrities even endorsed smoking until we discovered it led to disease. Have you ever heard this saying “There is a broad way that leads to destruction...?” Want to know what that means? Let’s talk about it. Comment here.

Got Food? Check. Got Clothing? Check. Got Wellness?
2009-09-15 11:21:00
When you take a trip, whether it’s a wilderness hunt in Wyoming or just a short weekend camping trip with your family, a lot of preparations need to be made for the journey. Truck driving, which often feels like the wilderness, is no different. We need to prepare for everything we will encounter while out on the road. Obviously, we prepare for things like food, money, clothes, personal hygiene and log books. But have you spent any time preparing yourself emotionally, physically or spiritually? They certainly don’t teach you that in driving school. Don’t leave home without this preparation. If you’re not sure what those things are, give us a call. Comment here.

Let Others Toot Your Horn
2009-09-14 14:08:00
When I was a young man, there appeared on the scene a boxer who was rapidly rising to become the Champion. On his way up, he announced publicly “I’m the greatest.” That seemed arrogant to me. I kept hoping he would lose a few fights and be taken down a notch or two. Unfortunately, he really was a good boxer and I never heard of him losing a fight. However, I still had a hard time respecting him. True humility doesn’t need to toot its own horn. Besides, it’s better to let someone else do it. Want to talk about it? Comment here.

What We Believe Matters
2009-09-12 00:43:00
One popular belief is that whatever is true for you is ok, and whatever is true for me is ok, even if they are different. It sounds harmless on the surface. The only problem is that what we believe directs our choices. For instance, let’s say we are both flying in an airliner and we each have to visit the restroom. You believe that the doors in the rear of the plane lead to restrooms, so you open one of those doors and find the restroom. I, on the other hand, believe that the door on the side of the plane with a red “T” handle leads to the restroom. But if I opened that door the plane would depressurize and I would probably be sucked out in the process. What I believed was not the truth at all and acting on it would really not be ok. There are truths that cannot be changed. If you would like to learn more about some of those truths, please let us know. Comment here.

Purpose Alleviates Loneliness
2009-09-10 17:26:00
Once a driver told me that for several weeks the only people he talked to were waitresses and fuel desk clerks. There are many ways to alleviate loneliness; some are good and some are bad. When we’re lonely, we really need something to sink our teeth into that will give meaning to life. Having a purpose can help us cope with loneliness much better. Instead, all too often we look in the wrong place for the answers. Next time you’re lonely, try answering the following questions: What am I here for? How did I get here? Where am I going? If you need help, just give us a ring. Comment here.

Why Did This Happen to Me Now?
2009-09-09 15:19:00
Ever wonder why things happen when they do? Sometimes these events are mere irritants; other times they are frustrating, extensive and expensive delays, which appear to be counter-productive to your bottom line. I have heard many stories of things that went wrong for drivers at the wrong time. Many times, the drivers who told me these stories could look back and see good purpose in the incidents, no matter how inconvenient they seemed at the time. Some of them even told me that they no longer become upset over delays or obstacles. That is a wonderful way to live. Want to talk about it? Comment here.

Tit For Tat
2009-09-04 13:20:00
When I was a kid in second grade, at the end of recess one of the teachers would blow a whistle before the bell would ring. We were supposed to line up, wait for the bell and then march into our classrooms. One day, when I ran to line up, I accidentally ran into the kid ahead of me. He turned around, slugged me and said, “Sorry, but I had to do that.” Now, if he’d hit me really hard, I might have slugged him back. Then we would have started exchanging slug for slug because the tit for tat attitude leads to escalation. Problem is if we are prone to getting even, we’ll become prisoners to those who offend us. Fortunately, there is an alternative called forgiveness. Forgiveness leads to a free and peaceable life. Choose forgiveness today. If you need help with that, give us a call. Comment here.

Time Alone Can Help Sort Priorities
2009-09-03 08:33:00
There is a lot of alone time in the front seat of a truck. One thing that loneliness causes us to do is to think about our live circumstances. We ask ourselves questions: What is my purpose?, What am I doing out here?, Am I where I’m supposed to be?, Is my marriage good?, Am I a good parent?, Is this the right company for me?, Am I making enough money?, and many more. These are all valid, but did you notice the order I put them in? The next time you find yourself alone think about what order your priorities are in. Keep the important things first. If you’re not sure what that should be, let us help you. Comment here.

They Never Really “Get Away With It”
2009-09-02 08:28:00
Does it seem like bad people get all the breaks while the rest of us, who try to do right by others get left out? Look at the recent history with the Enron Company. Those who cheated millions of people out of money got off with a mere “slap on the wrist.” If you or I tried something like that, we would wind up doing hard time in the penitentiary. Sometimes, it just doesn’t seem fair. However, there is the old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” The actions bad people do have a way of catching up with them. Remember, we do not know the rest of their story. Instead, we need to be more concerned about our own actions, and not be jealous of those who seem to get away with bad behavior. If you’d like to talk about this more, give us a call. Comment here.

So Hard to Live Right
2009-09-01 16:17:00
Ever try to do what’s right but find yourself messing up? Well, join the club. We try to be “Mr. Nice Guy” then something happens and we mess up. When I was a kid, I did something every day to tick my mother off. I decided to see if I could get by without getting spanked for a whole day by being a good boy. Things went along ok for a few minutes, then something went wrong and I was getting spanked again! Is this the story of your life? The fact is, we cannot pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps and live right by sheer determination alone. We need a better kind of strength in order to live right. Give us a call if you want to learn more. Comment here.
